SOTO Supports ‘We Ride Australia’

Posted on November 5, 2018 in Community

It’s no secret that we love cycling here at SOTO, but even more than that, we believe in sustainability so when We Ride Australia approached us to talk about improved infrastructure and transport options for all Aussies, it was a no-brainer.

We Ride was originally established as the Cycling Promotion Fund in 2000 but was formed as a Foundation in May 2017. Since then, they have taken on the mantle to inspire Aussies to choose cycling as a viable option for commuting and daily life as well as advocating to those in power to make sure that there are policies, infrastructure and programs in place to ensure cycling is a healthy and safe option for all involved.

No-one understands the life-changing effects of cycling better than the man heading up We Ride – Matt Bazzano. Before becoming the Managing Director of SHIMANO Australia Cycling, Matt cycled internationally in France from 1988 to 1993, representing Australia at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in road cycling and participated in the 1989, 1990 and 1991 World Road Cycling Championships becoming the national road race champion in 1990.

As part of their advocacy, Matt and his team are currently lobbying Canberra for improved infrastructure that will allow all Australians to commute and use our roads and cycleways safely and easily. It’s no secret that cycling is good for your health – reducing obesity, aiding in recovery from mental health issues and keeping our ageing population happy and socially connected – but also helping turn our cities into cleaner, quieter, safer, more economical and less stressful places to live, work and play.

With innovation at the core of SOTO and with our founder, Frank, an integral part of the Illawarra cycling community, we jumped at the chance to get involved with We Ride and their objectives. We believe that everyone should have the choice to cycle to work in an easy, safe and enjoyable manner and we hope that by supporting We Ride, this will soon be the case across Illawarra.
