SOTO a Proud Sponsor of the Australia Day Aquathon

Posted on January 17, 2018 in Community & News

The 2018 Australia Day Aquathon is a great celebration of the nation’s love for sport and our special relationship with the beach. At SOTO, we are passionately enthusiastic about the sense of community that the Aquathon brings into play, so we are delighted to be part of the event as a sponsor.

The big day will unfold along the picturesque Wollongong Foreshore, and there is something for everyone: you can swim and run, or, if you prefer a gentler pursuit of good health, you can join the popular 4km Community Walk. The swim is divided into smaller groups by age/gender, and the run is traffic free, with the support of a small army of wonderful volunteers. Aquathon is working hard to make the day safe and fun for all.

Female triathletes from Gong Wizards

Some of the more serious competitors from the Gong Wizards Triathlon School enjoy their achievement at the 2017 Aquathon finish line.

As with any community fitness event, a big part of the pleasure of Aquathon is the preparation. Regulars are known to seek out other participants, and encourage family, friends, and colleagues to join up and then train with them together in the days leading up to Aquathon. The Ready to TRY Aquathon? guide on the website has great tips on how best to enjoy the preparation and the mateship and conviviality that go with it. Donning the all-new 2018 Adult T-shirt or singlet, or kids Aquafun Tee, makes the experience even better. You can purchase yours at the time of online entry.

Australia Day Aquathon has for 19 years been a pillar of fundraising efforts for local non-profits and charities, and this year will be no exception. We encourage you to participate in the Aquathon or Community Walk for our preferred charity partners (or one of your choice), or perhaps donate at the online entry, with all donations directed to charity. It’s a simple process to creating a better Australia for all, and even a small contribution goes a long way in supporting locals most in need. The major charity partners for Aquathon are Anglicare Illawarra’s SHIFT Program, which provides support and housing for refugee families and those fleeing domestic violence, and Flagstaff Group, a venerable Illawarra social enterprise which has since 1966 supported people with a disability in achieving their goals.
