Illawarra Locals Rally for Homeless Youth, with Successful Ride Around the Lake

Posted on May 11, 2017 in News

SOTO Engineering was proud to support non-profit organisation Lighthouse as a first-time silver corporate partner of the 8th edition of the annual Ride Around the Lake fundraiser last weekend. The community spirit on the day and in the lead-up to the event successfully raised social awareness and funds for the Lighthouse Youth Initiative program offered by Lighthouse, which strives to break the cycle of youth homelessness through the provision of specialised life and workforce training and safe shelter.
The ride took place last Saturday 6th May, kicking off under stunning conditions at Lakeside Reserve at Kanahooka with hundreds of Illawarra locals and cycling enthusiasts taking part. The event offered a choice between a main 40km course around Lake Illawarra passing nine suburbs and a shorter 10km leisurely lakeside option. SOTO Consulting Engineers Founder and Managing Director Frank Soto himself geared up to represent the organisation and exhibit his fine cycling form, among over 520 other participants across all ages. Between the impressive turn out, generous donations and sponsorships, extensive media coverage and overwhelming community support, the 8th edition of the ride was a staggering success.

Hundreds of Illawarra locals got involved with the ride, raising over $18k for homeless youth.

While the total monies raised are still being calculated, event directors have confirmed that at least $18,000 in funds have been received for contribution to the Lighthouse Youth Initiative. Primarily a residential program for youth aged between 18 – 24 years experiencing homelessness, the initiative supports young people in resolving complex trauma from social hardship to aid their progression into a brighter future. The focus of the program is to grant these youths the stability, security, love and respect that will support and inspire them to make and sustain change throughout later life. This sense of community serves as a firm foundation from which successful engagement in employment and training opportunities is fostered, as well as developing the skills necessary to live independently. The Lighthouse Youth Initiative is dedicated to guiding the long-term transformation of the lives of as many homeless youths as possible, healing and supporting the collective community through constructive and sustainable engagement along this journey.
As the flagship fundraiser for the Lighthouse Youth Initiative, Ride Around the Lake is the greatest gesture of hope that can be offered to homeless youths in the Illawarra region. SOTO Engineering is privileged to have been involved at a silver partnership level for the 8th edition of the ride, and looks forward to further partnership opportunities with the Lighthouse organisation in future.
