The Role

Our requirement is for a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Design Draftsperson to join our drafting team in delivering industry best designs for use in various engineering jobs and projects. You will serve as a highly skilled contributor to the team responsible for producing and examining drawings for conformity to engineering and quality standards, design brief and optimisation.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work quickly and efficiently with a high level of precision, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be aligned with the SOTO culture.

  • Produce detailed technical drawings aligned to industry and Australian Standards and client expectations, as well as SOTO policies, procedures, design control measures and quality assurance requirements.
  • Identify drafting issues and discuss implementation strategies with the Lead Draftsman or Engineer to deliver solutions that have a sound technical and commercial orientation.
  • Monitor and verify the quality of drawings produced including accuracy and consistency of format, electronically and in hard copy.
  • Partner with engineering teams to develop design methodology, functional requirements, and execute concepts.
  • Competently perform 2D and 3D AutoCAD and Inventor/ Solidworks designs and recommend design improvements.
  • Participate in technical design reviews and ensure compliance with various industry standards.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external clients to maintain stable and sustainable relationships.
  • Apply thought to identify features that may optimise the efficiency of drafting duties and assist in the delivery of quality outcomes for customers.


  • Mechanical qualifications at Advanced Diploma level (or equivalent) are desirable.
  • Engineering/drafting consultancy experience.
  • 6+ years’ experience drafting mechanical components and systems.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial applications or similar sectors preferred.
  • Team player with a solid process and continuous improvement mindset
  • The ability to communicate complex concepts, explanations and solutions, in English, in a succinct manner to clients and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Current Driver’s License and willingness to travel if required.

Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria

  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Professional appearance and presentation required.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to work well in a group and independently.
  • Documented industry experience with Inventor or Solidworks
  • Ability to communicate with clients on a professional
  • Personable attitude with the ability to work well with other staff and clients.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certificate III Mechanical Technology (Mechanical trade), Certificate III Fabrication (Boilermaker trade) or equivalent.
  • Mechanical qualifications at Advanced Diploma level (or equivalent) are desirable.
  • 6+ years experience drafting mechanical components and systems.
  • Robust proficiency with AutoCAD, Inventor or Solidworks.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Demonstrated skills in writing and presenting in fluent English
  • Possesses a sense of urgency, strong organisational and follow-up skills
